What is a makeup fridge and do you really need one?

When it comes to the world of beauty, there are an enormous variety of products available that I really cannot live without, mascara for one, or makeup removing muslin clothes. There is however a couple of products out there, that I really can’t decide if they are the answer to all my beauty prayers or just something that is merely used by thousands to make their Instagram posts that little bit cooler… literally. I’m talking about the makeup fridge. Yes, you heard right, a teeny, desktop fridge for you to put your beauty products.

To many, you may have read that last part with a roll of the eyes, perhaps joined with a tut. What nonsense, who on earth will need a mini-fridge for skincare products. On the other hand, there could be some of you stunned at the sheer brilliance of the idea, for you are the true beauty addicts. Nothing to be ashamed of, and certainly no judgement here, I am probably the worse addict out there!

The cost of these little wish-listed (for some) items are varied somewhat, ranging from £30 to over £100. What you have to think is, will you still become overcome with happiness when you sit at your vanity table in the morning and admire it fondly every day. Or after a while, will you look at it filled with loathing, the same you get when you see that one particular ex who had wasted too much of your time. That is an answer that only you can decide on, I can’t be the little devil on your shoulder….

The question, do you actually need one of these fridges? The sensible grown up in me says “No, just stick with a dedicated section of the regular fridge if needs must” The true, unashamed beauty addict in me screams “Ummmmmm heck yes!”  But before you dash off to spend your wages on a pretty pastel desktop fridge, I thought I would share with you the products from your skincare routine that would rather enjoy a chilling! So, read on if you’d like to know what to put in a beauty fridge.

Day Creams

Day creams aren’t a product that particularly need putting in the fridge, however, some beauty pioneers have explained how applying a cooled daily moisturise works wonders on their over-tired puffy faces. With the chilling effect, they found their skin feel more lifted, de-puffed and the appearance of enlarged pores have been minimised.

Nail Varnish

Yes, believe it or not, nail varnish is a huge fan of residing in a fridge. The formula of the varnish stays at just the right consistency without it separating or becoming gloopy because of too much exposure to heat.

Face Mists

The heatwave of 2019 has well and truly past us by now, but the tip I kept seeing everywhere was popping your face mists or setting sprays into the fridge for a euphoric hydration burst. Just what you needed to stop you completely melting! This tip may be a little useless now, but a great one to remember come the heatwave of next year or even something to try on holiday.

Face Masks

I have been known to load a dedicated shelf of the fridge with sheet masks. There is nothing better than applying a chilled sheet mask  (particularly if that “one drink” Saturday night escalated to grabbing a taxi at 3 am with a box full of cheesy chips) Much like the day creams, cold sheet masks will diminish any puffiness and will also be very calming to the skin. Our Instaclear Control Mask once chilled, becomes the ultimate treat for your face! Don’t forget that this can also be used for eye masks too for those worn out peepers!

Organic skincare products

Organic and products that contain probiotics with no preservatives are best kept in the fridge as their shelf life isn’t the longest. With some products out there being considered “fresh” and so, therefore, refrigeration is key for the product and how long it lasts. Another way you can look at it is, products containing probiotics and active ingredients are the same as milk, or yoghurt because let’s face it, leaving the milk out of the fridge doesn’t end well….

Believe it or not, even though these are called makeup fridges, it has been advised by a number of professional makeup artists that putting your makeup in one of these will ruin your makeup products! From making your lipstick lose it's moisture and foundation will become less pliable.

In this day and age, where decluttering this the latest, liberating habit and we are all busy clearing out every corner of your homes and finding a place for everything, right down to a paperclip. It’s no wonder our vanity desks have had a case of the Marie Kondo’s, it just so happens these trendy chillers are sparking the “joy” we are all desperately trying to look for.

Having said that, could the tidying craze be the answer to the popularity of these fridges? Or maybe our skincare routines are taking a cleaner route and so the products we now use require that helping hand.

I guess in a rather, long-winded way, what I’m trying to determine is, are these beauty fridges a bit of a gimmick? Possibly… Any sensible person would simply pop their skincare products in the main fridge if it was needed. I admire that and plan to be just like you when I grow up. For now, though I’ll yearn for a beauty fridge of my very own one day.
