Is The Aluminium In Deodorants & Antiperspirants Bad For You?

deodorant aluminium

This became one of the biggest topics over the past decade, as the fear around aluminium in antiperspirants spread globally, while alternative solutions became more common. We have recently launched our own activated charcoal natural deodorant which is completely free of any nasty ingredients you might find in your common deodorant.

So where did this fear come from? And is aluminium safe or not? Well the fear arose as the media began discussing some tests being produced around the absorption of aluminium and whether it could cause breast cancer, among the list of diseases. So let’s go a bit more into detail on this topic.

The Link Between Antiperspirants & Breast Cancer

The issue is when you shave your underarms, you can create little cuts in the skin. As you spray or rub on your antiperspirant-deodorant, the aluminium can then enter into the body and be absorbed into the bloodstream. The issue is that the skin doesn’t need to be broken for the aluminium to be absorbed, however it is six-fold if the skin is cut.

The original sighting by one scientist highlighted how they prevent the body from removing toxins, which, when trapped, find their way into the lymph nodes. They could have an estrogen life effect, which is the primary female sex hormone, which can promote the growth of breast cancer cells.

Breast cancer is one of the biggest killers in the UK, killing 11,563 people in the UK in 2016, however the numbers are 38% down since the 1970’s, as knowledge and surgical practices are becoming vastly greater. Over 55,000 women are diagnosed with this disease each year in the UK, while over half of breast cancers actually start in the upper outer quadrant of the breast, which is located right next to the underarm.

With this being the prime area the cancer is developed, absorbing in a chemical which is believed to be a factor is an understandable signal for fear.

Scientists have been studying this area and this is their prediction, however there isn’t 100% evidence pointing it out just yet, tests are still ongoing.

So Why Do They Use Aluminium In Antiperspirants?

The important thing to remember is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirants. Antiperspirants are there to block and plug the sweat glands, while they also dissolve sweat. The issue is finding a natural alternative that is as successful as the conventional method to block the sweat ducts.

What Else Should I look Out For?

The other ingredient we recommend staying clear from is parabens, which are obviously not present in our natural deodorant. They are preservatives and are commonly found in most of these products, however they tend to be found in breast tumours. That is not to say there is a direct connection, as they say correlation doesn’t mean causation (nerd cap on), but it is another area scientists are studying.
